Burns Of London Marquee
Burns Of London Marquee Ref: burnsmarquee

The mainstay of the current Burns revival, the Marquee is the ideal cross between our £600 plus Hank Marvin's and something a little more affordable for the average John Q Citizen.

The instantly recognisable style of sixties instruments is as usual evident. The 3 piece split scratch plate, the scroll headstock and trademark deep green burst finish-it could only be a Burns! But the Marquee may be "economy" by price, but you'd never guess from the quality build and finish. This has to be one of the best guitars around at this price range. There's no sense of compromise and cost-cutting, sometimes evident when famous guitar manufacturers make cheaper versions of their own legends. There's no supercilious whiff of, "Well you couldn't afford the real thing so you'll just have to like this.

The tremolo system is designed by American company Points Technology, and gives a pleasing woody sound, more so than its competitors. The three Rez-O-Matic single-coil pickups mean the Marquee has plenty of sounds available. The pickups are controlled by a single volume pot, a five-way switch and two tone pots - the first is dedicated to the bridge pickup, and is also a push/pull for three more settings, and the second controls both the other pickups. The "out-of-phase" in-between positions are a delight, with a character of their own -a pleasing variation on the tonal colour you'd get on a Strat in these positions. The new teal green polyester finish is beautifully set of with the slightly aged appearance of the mint green-tinged bakelite style rez-o-matic pickups and scratch guards, whilst the gold hardware belies it low price. The electronics are the key though-it uses the Rez-O-Matic single coil pick ups found on its very expensive cousins, such as the £700 Hank Marvin endorsed model!

Back in the early 1960s, Jim Burns' guitars were a significant part of the home-grown UK guitar market, alongside names like Vox and Watkins. The company produced monsters like the Bison (launched in 1961 and soon to be re-released) with its four pickups (later cut down to three), plus the Split Sonic, Vista Sonic, and the Marvin, designed in 1964 and named after Hank when The Shadows became endorsees for Burns. We are offering a selection of the Burns instruments and accessories here.
